ALL ABOUT HAT BOXING
DIVABETIC's HAT BOXING Competitions are sponsored by Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique (http://www.harlemsheaven.com/)
If your church and/or ministry is interested hosting a HAT BOXING Competition in 2006 please e-mail us: info@divabetic.org
Our HAT BOXING competitions were developed to generate interest and raise awareness for diabetes education and motivational outreach. In addition, we want to recognize creativity and artistic talent in your congregation. HAT BOXING competitors are chosen because of their outstanding service, creative spirit and distinctive style!
Preliminary round of DIVABETIC's HAT BOXING competitors have the chance to win a one of a kind creation from Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique (estimated value $450), additional prizes awarded by local merchants as well as the distinction of being "crowned" GBC HWM's HAT BOXING Champion thus qualifying them for the future rounds of HAT BOXING in the Spring of 2006.
In order to compete you MUST fully adhere to all DIVABETIC's Rules & Regulations. All HAT BOXING competitors must be prepared to describe their designs with regard to our theme: "DENIAL'S NOT MY STYLE." Specifically these brief descriptions should highlight a message of early diabetes detection to the judges and/or congregation at the appointed time during our presentation.
HAT BOXING RULES & REGULATIONS
DIVABETIC's HAT BOXING theme "DENIAL'S NOT MY STYLE" specifically refers to the over 6 million diabetics in our country who are currently unaware of their condition and therefore face an increased risk of stroke, amputation, and blindness the longer their condition goes undetected. DIVABETIC and GBC HWM strongly encourage early detection and prevention of diabetes as well as
developing positive role models for successful blood sugar control to further illustrate the effectiveness of an adopting a "healthy lifestyle" in order to avoid the serious consequences of the disease.
DIVABETIC believes in the spirit of "friendly competition." All competitors are welcome to enlist additional help, support and any resources necessary in order to create "unique and innovative" objects of art worthy of your congregation's admiration. DIVABETIC recommends seeking out the "creativity and craftsmanship" of your friends and family members in the hopes of furthering
discussions regarding diabetes. Although we will not disqualify any HAT BOXING competitor for paying professionals to decorate his or her hat box we strongly discourage this practice.
Competitors are welcome to dedicate their hat box designs to a friend or family member who is currently living with diabetes or to the memory of a loved one affected by the disease.
Suggested materials for HAT BOXING decorations include but are not limited to: markers, paint, make-up, leather, suede, glitter, glue, feathers, fur, fabric, flowers, dried food products, buttons, rhinestones, jewelry, paper, magazines, fruit, twigs, photos and yarn.
Hat boxes (both inside and outside) will be judged on a scale of 1 to 5 (good to excellent) in four (4) categories:
1. originality & artistic expression
2. difficulty level and technique
3. the number and variety of materials used
4. strict adherence to this year's theme ("DENIAL'S NOT MY STYLE")
The entry with the most points (out of a possible 40 ) will win the GRAND PRIZE: Harlem's Heaven Hat valued at $450.00. Second prize: Ellin LaVar Textures gift basket, valued at $300.00. Third prize: Idonia Skin Care products gift
basket, valued at $200.00. All entrants will receive a commemorative HAT BOXING hat pin as well as a DIVABETIC "DENIAL'S NOT MY STYLE" T-shirt.
RULES:
1. You must use the hat box provided by Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique and stamped with Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique's seal. No substitutions or replacements allowed.
2. You must decorate the inside and outside of your hat box.
3. Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique's seal must be visible at all times. No final hat box designs or decorations can cover or block visibility of the Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique's seal. Any designs that camouflage, alter, cover or obstruct Harlem's Heaven Hat Boutique's seal will be immediately disqualified.

DON'T LET DIABETES GROW IN THE DARK THIS HALLOWEEN
Though treats will be 'good and plenty' this Halloween, the necessary care and caution that's needed for millions of children who are living with diabetes won't be. One of the 'scariest' facts recently reported about diabetes is how quickly the percentage of newly diagnosed children with type 2 diabetes has climbed from less than 5% before 1994 to between 30 and 50% in subsequent years according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As demand rises for diabetes screenings, supplies, services and support it is increasingly difficult for today's current health care systems to keep up and help provide resources. The awareness and participation of organizations like yours have become essential to helping maintain the welfare of our children.
DIVABETIC/DCNJ is dedicated to motivating, encouraging and supporting all people living with or affected by diabetes as well as providing additional funding for several other diabetes related charities. Halloween, ironically has become the "unofficial kickoff" for National Diabetes Awareness Month in November, so the real "trick" to lowering the risk for a child living with diabetes is by creating educational/fundraising opportunities that many may benefit from all year long. DIVABETIC/DCNJ'S goal is to "unmask" the common misconceptions about the disease for parents, the children and the public at large, and get corporate support to ensure easy access to healthier choices for all.
Don't let a child get 'spooked' by this silent killer - help them stay safe. Support middle school screening programs, glucose testing supplies and additional "pump therapy" counseling by joining DIVABETIC/DCNJ's Little PumpKids: "Growing Up With Diabetes" Awareness Campaign.
Here's how your organization can participate this Halloween season:
Raise Money for Little PumpKids by:
• Sponsoring the sale of Little PumpKids' mylar balloons at your store on Halloween (e-mail:info@divabetic.org for details)
• Sell pumpkins, stickers, pins, and key chains in the spirit of Halloween to support the cause
• Refer friends and family to the DIVA SHOP at divabetic.org
• Send a personal donation by check or money order (details listed below)
Share Knowledge with Little PumpKids by:
• Present a diabetes "trick or truth" trivia contest
• Post SUGAR SAVVY tips for treats on bulletin boards or by e-mail
• Staff a diabetes community resource table
• Include alternative "non food" activities at Halloween parties
